Traditional Chocolate Tea

6
Traditional chocolate tea is a hot beverage made by mixing roasted cacao or cocoa powder and milk or plant based milk substitute, and sometimes spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg.
3
But it is more than just a drink – it’s a cultural experience that has been enjoyed for generations in Caribbean and Latin American countries, and is often served as a breakfast or midday snack.
4
The drink has a rich, chocolatey flavor and is typically sweetened with sugar or honey. Some variations use water instead of milk, and others add condensed milk (or plant based alternate) for a creamier texture. The addition of spices like cinnamon or nutmeg not only enhances the flavor, but also provides health benefits such as improving digestion and reducing inflammation.

In some Caribbean countries, traditional chocolate tea is also known as “cocoa tea” or “hot chocolate”. The drink is often made using locally-grown cocoa beans, which gives it a unique and authentic flavor. Some traditional recipes call for the use of a “chocolatera”, a special pot used to mix and froth the cocoa powder and milk.In some countries, chocolate tea is enjoyed with a side of bread or pastries for dipping.

Traditional Chocolate Tea

Ingredients:

Select any tea from the BROUHAHA ROYAL CHOCOLATE Collection
2 cups of water
1 cup of milk (or plant based alternate)
2 tablespoons of sweetener (sugar or alternate)
Pinch of salt

Instructions:

Bring water to a boil in a medium-sized saucepan.
Add your desired Royal Chocolate tea to the boiling water.
Allow to boil for 2 min.
Add Milk or Alternate and Sweetener and let boil for 1 min.
Add any additional ingredients desired.
Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for around 3 minutes.
Remove from heat and strain the chocolate tea.
Add any additional milk, sugar, or salt to the mixture and return it to the saucepan.
Heat the tea on medium heat until it is hot, but not boiling.
Serve hot and enjoy your traditional chocolate tea made with roasted cacao.

Additional tips:
Consider using a mortar and pestle to crush any larger pieces of cacao before adding them to the boiling water.
This can help release more of the cacao's natural oils and create a richer flavor.
If you prefer a sweeter beverage, feel free to adjust the amount of sugar to taste.
For a creamier consistency, you can use a milk frother to froth the milk before adding it to the mixture.
Don't forget to garnish your cacao tea with a sprinkle of cinnamon or a drizzle of honey for an extra touch of sweetness.
